Dog lingo 101

if you are a beginner in the world of purebred dogs and dog shows, this is just a small sample of the lingo

  • Conformation not confirmation - (the structure of the dog, or the dog show that assesses the dog's structure)
  • Sire - the male dog that is the father of a litter of puppies
  • Dam not Dame - the female dog that is the mother of a litter (it's ok to say Dam, when referring to the female dog, you won't offend anyone)
  • Dog - the male, or can sometimes mean both genders when speaking in general terms 
  • Bitch - the female, (it's ok to say bitch when referring to the female dog, you won't offend anyone)
  • Stud - the male dog used for breeding
  • Purebred - not purebread
  • BYB - back yard breeder, someone that breeds indiscriminately and doesn't do health testings
  • Puppy - not baby or baby puppy
  • Litter - the puppies
  • whelp - or whelping, the birthing process in dogs, also whelps can mean the pups in a litter
  • Get - not produce, the progeny (offspring) of a male or female dog
  • Tie - not lock or locked, the actual act of the stud dog and bitch breeding
